What is economic empowerment?

Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, or human trafficking come from a broad range of backgrounds. Survivors’ needs, when considering leaving, planning to leave, or having left an abusive or exploitative situation, can also be wide-ranging and intersecting. Economic empowerment programming is a helpful form of support for survivors, but should begin by addressing survivors’ immediate needs including crisis management, safety, and stability.  

 

Programs that support economic empowerment help participants increase their earning potential, which impacts their immediate and long-term financial stability, independence, and self-sufficiency.
